Why I’ve left a gift in my will

Helen’s inspiring commitment to a safer future for animals in need has left a lasting impact. Born in Adelaide in October 1938, Helen dedicated her life to helping animals, becoming frugal to leave as much as possible to those in need.

Her legacy lives on through our tireless work rescuing abused and abandoned stray dogs in Romania.

Types of Gifts You Can Leave

If you would like to remember ROLDA UK in your Will, there are three main types of gifts you can make:

A Residuary Gift

A percentage of the residue of your estate once other gifts have been satisfied. This will ensure your gift grows with your estate.

Pecuniary Gift

A certain sum of money, which can be used for some needs, like surgeries, medical treatments, or operating costs.

Specific Gift

A gift of an item, such as property, shares, or other valuables. This will help us with specific resources required for shelter expansion or rehabilitation programs.

Tax benefits

Leave a lasting legacy and benefit your estate at the same time

Leaving a legacy to ROLDA UK in your will can offer some financial benefits. If your estate is above the Inheritance Tax threshold, you may reduce or eliminate the tax payable. Gifts to registered charities are wholly exempt from Inheritance Tax (IHT). If you designate all your estate to charities, you will not have to pay any IHT. Even if you leave part of your estate to relatives and friends, you can reduce the tax payable by also making a bequest to a registered charity.

Additionally, leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity can reduce the inheritance tax rate from 40% to 36%.

Together, we are helping

A country with millions
homeless animals

One of the poorest region
of Romania

Thousands of stray dogs
in Galati city alone

Thousands feral cats (and their
number grows alarmingly)

Hundreds of horses and donkeys at risk of being abandoned in any moment

Leaving a legacy FAQS

Here are a few of the questions that ROLDA UK are commonly asked about giving to charities through making a Will. Leaving a legacy is a great way of giving something back – many charities rely heavily on legacy donations and all donations are so gratefully received.

Who should make a will?

Everyone should make a Will because this is the only way you can be sure that your Estate will be distributed in accordance with your wishes. It is particularly important for parents with young families to make a Will to ensure that their children's needs are safeguarded. It is not enough to guarantee that their financial future is secure, thought must also be given to who will bring them up if you and your partner die. Guardians can be appointed in your Will and your solicitor will help with details of Trust Funds.

Why do I need to make a will?

If you have no family and have not made a Will, your entire estate could pass to the UK government and be added to the Treasury office. So, while you might want your closest friend to have all your possessions, or leave your estate to charity, the law will not agree if there is no Will.

Is there a minimum amount I must leave?

No, the amount you leave to others or to ROLDA UK is entirely your decision.

Can I leave gifts to more than one charity?

Yes, you can leave gifts to multiple charities. In fact, it’s common for people to leave gifts to three different charities in their Will.

Do I need to tell the ROLDA UK that I'm leaving them a gift in my Will?

No, informing the ROLDA UK is entirely optional. Many people choose not to notify their chosen charities. However, if you feel comfortable sharing this information, it can help the ROLDA UK plan future activities more effectively.

How much will it cost?

You can have your Will written for FREE using ROLDA UK’s FREE Will writing service. This is a professional service and there are no limits to the content you can put into your will. All we ask is that you may like to remember ROLDA UK in your will with a gift however large or small. Thank you.

More information can be found by visiting www.bequeathed.org/roldauk  plus Bequeathed offer many other FREE options how you can be sure your wishes are met ensuring the cause that always meant a lot to you can continue to help animals. The team at Bequeathed are professional Will writers and they will help you every step of the way. You may be asked if you would like to leave a gift to ROLDA UK. You are not obliged to do this, but we would be so grateful if you did.

If you choose to use a solicitor, their charges will usually depend on the complexity of your affairs and the time taken to draw up your Will. Don't be afraid to ask for an estimate in advance. It may help to obtain estimates from various local firms before deciding which one to use. There may even be a reduced cost if you and your partner make matching Wills that leave the same property and possessions.

Which charity should I leave a gift to?

It would be incredible if you were to leave a gift to ROLDA UK but the choice is entirely yours! With over 160,000 registered charities in the UK, you have a wide array to choose from, ranging from large, well-known organisations to smaller, local or community-based charities. If you don’t have a favourite charity, consider what’s important to you and if you want help dogs & cats our charity is the one to choose where you can rest assured your gift will be used in the areas most needed.

Can I only leave money to a charity?

No, you have three different options for gifts you can leave to ROLDA UK:

Pecuniary gifts: A set amount of money.

Residuary gifts: A percentage or the entirety of your remaining estate after other specified gifts, costs, and taxes.

Specific gifts: A specific object, asset, or property.

You can discuss your preferences with us to ensure your wishes are clear.

Can I decide how my gift is used by ROLDA UK?

Yes, but it’s best to discuss this with the ROLDA UK first. Sometimes, a charity may not be able to use a gift in the way you intend, which could affect their ability to accept the gift.

What if I change my mind?

Many people put off making a Will in case they change their minds about legacies and bequests in later years.
However, once you have made a Will, the original contents can be changed or added to by means of a Codicil and will not involve rewriting your Will. The Codicil must be signed and witnessed in the same way as the Will itself, although the witnesses do not have to be the same. The Codicil must be kept with, but not affixed to, your Will.

If you have any further questions, we would be more than happy to help. Please email angelique@rolda.org.uk
